Instructions
In Term Assignment 2 we are looking at the way emerging technologies evolve on the road to being used by companies. To do this, we will use the Gartner Hype Cycle and the Canadian Newsstream.
Go to Understanding Gartner’s Hype Cycles (how to find this is outlined at the end of the instructions). Look at Figure 1 (The Hype Cycle) and read the information about the hype cycle. Look at Figure 2, the Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies 2020. Then look at Figure 4, Phases of the Hype Cycle and what happens during the different phases of the cycle.
Go to the Canadian Newsstream. How to find this is shown at the end of the instructions. This will be used to get articles about the technology that you choose.
What to do (gathering information):
- You will need to pick an emerging technology. Go to the emerging- technologies pdf in Week 3 Submodule September 23. Pick any technology from among the technologies found in the Innovation Trigger phases of the hype cycles.
- Look for the technology you picked in the each of the hype cycles from 2016 to 2021. Note the years when the technology appears, where on the cycles it is each year, and what the estimated Time to Plateau is.
- Using the MacOdrum Library news databases, search Canadian Newsstream for the number of articles about the innovation during the period 2000 to 2021. Also identify reported events that could affect the innovation trigger (R&D, startups, successes, failures…).
What to do (write a paper):
Part 1: Cover page with name and student number
Part 2 (400 words)
Identification and description of innovation. How the innovation works and in what way it is an innovation (what it does that is new or better). This should be written for the educated reader who has no specific knowledge of the innovation.
Part 3 (300 words)
Discuss the innovation’s movement on the hype cycle. The years between 2016 and 2021 it has appeared. If it has appeared for more than one year how its position on the hype cycle has changed and the time to plateau. This should be in the form of a list or table.
Also discuss the Canadian Newsstream information about the innovation between 2000-2021, both the number of articles per year about the innovation and the events that could affect the innovation trigger. This information should be presented in the form of a list or table arranged chronologically.
Part 4 (400 Words)
Given the Hype Cycle and Newssteam information, discuss how the innovation fits the hype cycles. Does the news about the innovation follow the hype cycle pattern? Does the innovation disappear? Does it follow the Time to Plateau predictions? What is your opinion about the success of the Hype Cycle given your innovation and the news information you have found?
Part 5: References
Part 6: Template
This template is used for two things: first it is part of this paper and is to be submitted with the paper. Second it is data for the swarm and a copy of the template must be submitted to the swarm (see Swarm Assignment instructions for details). The template should contain:
a- Name and brief description of innovation (100 words)
b- A time line showing the movement of the innovation on the hype cycle between 2016 and 2021 including prediction details (in table form).
c- The number of articles versus time from the Canadian Newsstream in table form (2000-2021).
d- A time line showing key events and dates in the history of the innovation starting from 2000. Include details that would explain observed movement on the hype cycles (when things happened, increases in media coverage, etc.) (in table form).
